What are birds of prey? And how are birds of prey different than other avians? Learn about our fine feathered friends during this fun, family event. Meet roving birds of prey, attend special programming, and receive a tasty treat (while supplies last)! Free with the cost of admission.

For members only! Join us to learn about the science of ice. Make ice cream, construct slippery slopes, and more! Make animal enrichment and meet Animal Ambassadors. Enjoy refreshments and other goodies – just for our valued members. The event is free to CuriOdyssey members, but you must register in advance to save your spot. Which animals have skin covered in scales or scutes, are cold-blooded, lay shelled eggs, and breathe air? Reptiles, of course! In celebration of these fascinating animals, CuriOdyssey will be hosting Reptile Day on Friday, November 11, 2011.

Take part in engaging reptile-themed activities:

11am: Reptile-themed animal program
3pm: Turtle Talk
All day: Meet roving reptiles in various locations


Each visitor will receive a special reptile treat for attending the celebration. Make sure to enter your name in a drawing for a chance to win a reptile goodie basket!

Discover the science behind the spooky things you see at Halloween. Museum educators will expose haunted house tricks of the trade and reveal to visitors how those creepy, scary things happen.

Wear your costume and meet CuriOdyssey’s nocturnal animals, experiment hands-on with spooky science, and take part in science-inspired trick-or-treating! Everyone will receive a sweet treat for attending the event. Don't forget to bring your flashlight to explore!

Food will be available to purchase from local food trucks, including Toasty Melts and Treatbot, the Bay
Area's only karaoke ice cream truck (please bring cash).

Coastal Cleanup Day 2011

Make a difference at your backyard beach and be part of a global endeavor to clean up our oceans. Join CuriOdyssey and Coyote Point Recreation Area rangers to clean the beach and make The Bay safer for wildlife and people.

Check in at the beach at 9:00 a.m. (signs will be posted directing volunteers to the registration area).  Wear sunscreen, shoes, a hat, and gloves. Help reduce waste by bringing your own re-usable water bottle and trash-collecting bucket. We’ll provide pencils and a special data card to tally the items you collect. The data is used to find ways to reduce marine debris in the future.

International Vulture Awareness Day

Vultures are an ecologically vital group of birds who face a range of threats; many species of vultures are currently facing extinction. Take part in International Vulture Awareness Day at CuriOdyssey to learn about vultures and their place in the animal kingdom. Meet our resident vulture, Scooter, and enjoy vulture programming.

River Otter Day

Which mammal has tiny webbed feet, water repellent fur and the third most powerful jaws of any North American animal? It’s the North American River Otter! In celebration of these amazing mammals, CuriOdyssey will be hosting River Otter Day on Thursday, August 18, 2011.

Visit CuriOdyssey to take part in an array of exciting activities and celebrate all things otter!
-          Attend an otter-themed animal program at 11am
-          Watch an otter feeding at noon
-          See a special otter enrichment activity at 3pm.


Visitors will have the opportunity to create cards for the otters. Families may also enter a drawing for a chance to win an otter-themed gift bag, and everyone will receive a special gift for attending the day’s celebration.

 

Keeper Appreciation Week

Our keepers work hard all year in order to provide all of our non-releaseable animals the best care possible. To show our appreciation for all of the amazing things they do, we'll be celebrating them the entire week!

Activities for Zoo Keeper Appreciation Week:
- "Meet the Keeper" Program, 11AM,  July 19- July 23. Check out our special "Meet the Keeper" program to meet a keeper and her favorite animal. Our regularly scheduled Animals in Action program is taking a break for Zoo Keeper Week and will return the following week at its normal time.
- Bring a card for a keeper, get one free child admission. Show our keepers you care! On Wednesday, July 20, bring in a thank you card for the keepers and get one free child admission for your party (limit one free admission per group).
- Enter for a chance to win a behind-the-scenes tour. When you visit during Zoo Keeper Appreciation Week, you can enter a drawing for a chance to win an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour! The more you visit, the more chance you'll have to win.

Earth Day Celebration 2011

Sunday, April 17, 2011 from 11am-5pm

Join us for our fourth annual Earth Day celebration! This year we're putting a spotlight on urban farming, backyard beekeeping, composting, and how to save energy in the home. Take part in our annual beach clean up; it's always a family favorite! Tinker with spinBots, make solar snacks, and investigate invertebrates with the help of our science educators.  Bring your old halogen floor lamp and swap it for an energy saving one. An array of tasty, sustainable foods will be available for purchase. Bring the entire family to celebrate science, nature, and our amazing Earth.

- Understand beekeeping with help from the Beekeepers Guild of San Mateo County
- Learn to make compost from a Master Composter
- See how to plant a sustainable garden with Take Root
- Discover how to raise chickens in your backyard
- Create your own spinBots
- Participate in a halogen lamp swap with Rising Run Energy Center. Please bring your 300 watt or greater halogen lamp and get a new, energy-efficient florescent lamp for free! You must be a resident of San Mateo County to qualify.
- Learn more about ewaste
